James, it really depends on how comfortable you are when you begin. For me, I started at 3 (treadmills may differ) and I worked myself up gradually until I could run at maybe 6 - 6.5 and sustain it for at least 45 minutes. Now, I run mostly outside, but two days a week, I walk on the treadmill at 5. I play with the incline.
